Leadership Message from the Author

I have strong and unwavering core beliefs about effective and meaningful leadership that has everything to do with people and relationships. These core beliefs and values are based on my perspectives of effective leadership distilled from my many years of experiences and observations. I believe an effective leader is a facilitator of empowering the great minds of stakeholders to pull together a well defined strategic plan in support of management teams and their ability to reach performance/expected outcomes. Their character needs to be one of integrity, perseverance and respect and must be committed to continuous improvement, and dedicated to lifelong learning and discovery. The effective leader has heart and an awareness and appreciation for the knowledge and skills of the experts in the field. A leader with heart takes time to listen to the stakeholders, gather information and analyze needs to ensure effective, meaningful and quality management/support systems reaches the minds of all employees. An effective leader will facilitate the development of shared visions and goals to ensure a collaborative nature and buy-in mentality within the organization. There must be a unified quest to setting standards for the orgaqnization – it cannot be a divided front – collaboration is key. An empowering leader embraces ongoing learning and risk taking.

Keeping the heart in leadership recognizes that an effective leader must be a 21st century thinker and planner, one who thinks outside of the box and has the talent to encourage others to do the same. A leader with heart is inclusive not exclusive, a “guide on the side” not the “sage on the stage”, a believer and promoter in the expertise that exists within and a strategic planner based on realities versus personal and political agendas. An empowering leader should not be someone who comes in with his/her own agenda but someone who is willing to listen to what is needed and follow through based on the information gathered. He/She should exemplify someone who truly has the passion and dedication to the profession. Some business practices are cyclical – it’s the role of the leader to ensure the company doesn’t go back in time but moves forward building upon what we know to be effective practices. When coaching, a leader uses the heart to “model” strategies and expectations, not just “talk about” strategies and expectations. The leader must have the skill set and expertise to observe, analyze and give constructive feedback to enhance the overall working environment. Coaching from the heart includes the facilitation and analysis of “the big picture” – to guide the stakeholders in the right direction in the decision making process. When building a culture of trust among the work place the leader models strategic thinking in an effort to reduce the practice of “micro-managing” and enhancing the practice of “empowerment”.

Lead with greatness, passion, integrity and heart – it matters!
