"Leadership - The Heart Matters" represents the importance of opening the heart when leading a group of people. It is a book written for anyone in a leadership position whether it’s with an educational institute, volunteer group, sports organization, government entity or multi-national business. Wherever, whoever or whatever you’re leading, the guiding principles are the same.

The book focuses on building relationships and the “why” and “how” of leadership work. Leading with heart is a powerful way to lead a team in any profession. To lead with heart one must think in terms of empowerment not power, facilitator not dictator, understand the characteristics that promote heart healthy leadership, be a model for the commonalities identified among the stakeholders, guide without micro-managing, voice with clarity, direction and passion and have the confidence to support not suppress based on your own experiences, beliefs and core values.

Why the heart? . . . At the inner core of all people is “heart” – not the physical organ, but the center of one’s personality, the center of character and emotional life. “Heart” drives feelings, emotions, intuitions, actions, and reactions. Using the heart is part of the process of truly understanding the whole of a problem or situation. Emotions, led by the heart, dictate how we interact with others… no matter age, experience, profession, problem, etc…emotions play a huge part in perception, results and outcomes. The heart lies deep within our souls and is the essence of our spirit, courage and enthusiasm.

“Leading” is setting a direction towards the achievement of goals… “Leading with heart” is setting a direction towards the achievement of goals by creating synergy among team members based on common values, beliefs, visions and goals. How you get there matters... people matter regardless of the capacity in which they serve in the organization... relationships matter. Leading with heart takes into consideration the heart of others. Desired results will happen faster and more efficiently when there is collective buy-in. Collective buy-in comes from relationship building where people are empowered and motivated to perform their jobs with a full heart. Taking care of your people brings the act of “leading” into leadership – this is the heart work.

The book is intended to be a resource for developing your own leadership style, for growing as an individual as well as a leader. The seven heart principles: Empowerment, Character, Integrity, Voice, Model, Guide and Confidence serve as essential components in heart healthy leadership. These principles are not about a “theory” they are based on actual experiences that have proven success. Practicing and reflecting upon these principles will encourage, engage, excite, empower and energize people to the point where their collective decisions and practices lead to positive and desired outcomes. The heart principles do not support leadership that is dictatorial, top down, hierarchical or self promoting but rather embrace strong core beliefs and values fueled by passion, dedication, integrity, and rightness and grounded in wisdom, intuition, compassion and confidence.

“Gentle Reminders” are included throughout the chapters in the book. Their purpose is to summarize topics and to allow you to stop, reflect, and think about how they relate to your leadership practice. There is also a “Reflections” component throughout the book that encourages you to apply the topics and questions to your own experiences. The “Reflections” component is important because just as reading books about diet and exercise without actually changing your lifestyle won’t change your body, reading a book on leadership without reflecting and putting the concepts into practice won’t make you a better leader.

Take time with this book... it is not intended to be a quick read. Use the “Reflections” component to reflect on each topic and enhance your own leadership practice and experiences. You may find that you want to write out the answers to each reflection question and review them periodically to see how you have grown in your leadership practice.
